Auspicious energy descends upon goodness; calamitous energy descends upon evil &#8211; this is nothing other than the response summoned by one&#8217;s own single heart\/mind. Yet there is genuine goodness, and there is that which merely resembles goodness but is not. If the heart-mind is not still, it is not clear; if it is not clear, it is not bright; and if it is not bright, the dregs within it cannot be dissolved. The first goal, then, is to purify the heart-mind and lessen desire [<\/em><em>\u6e05\u5fc3\u5be1\u6b32<\/em><em>]. Why must one do this? Everyone Alike &#8211; Realised Only in Middle Age \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8d2e79a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8d2e79a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em>People simply follow whatever factors their present circumstances and occupations, acting as they please, believing that this is simply what life is. Everyone follows a similar path in this, and no one knows how to nurture their own body and mind. The results each person obtains, however, differ. Most people, only after passing age forty, start to notice that body and mind feel somewhat different from before.\u00a0 Yet not knowing the reason why, they seek out medicines and health tonics, hoping to restore their former condition.\u00a0 And most cannot get what they wish for. When told that this is bodily and mental decline, and that signs of gradual ageing will follow, most do not believe it, saying instead: \u2018This is merely a passing, minor discomfort &#8211; everyone experiences such things; apart from this one point, I feel nothing else out of order, and it will resolve itself within a few days.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8a33b96 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"8a33b96\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d3a2332 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d3a2332\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t4. Only in Practicing Stillness Does One Know Its Benefit \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6dc6535 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6dc6535\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em>When a person has the affinity to seek cultivation and to practice sitting meditation, he would gradually come to know its benefits and gradually come to know the effects of purifying the mind and lessening desire. At the same time he realizes that his thinking before this had not had a single moment &#8211; not even a second &#8211; of stillness, and that the fatigue he had felt came from the wrongful use of stimulants to relieve it. Once a person has reached this stage of purifying the mind and lessening desire, and gradually wishes to progress further, he becomes curious, from many angles, about what comes after &#8211; how, having purified the mind and lessened desire, one&#8217;s very temperament [<\/em><em>\u6c23\u8cea<\/em><em>] is transformed.<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-af2da04 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"af2da04\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-91c275b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"91c275b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t5. Studying Scripture, and Testing the Change in Oneself \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7e7454b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7e7454b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em>He may take up the study of scriptures or of the transmitted instructions or seek out others with whom to exchange and refine his knowledge &#8211; not realizing that once the work of purifying the mind and lessening desire has continued long enough, the change of temperament comes about of itself. How can this be verified? By examining oneself carefully: the things one used to be fond of, the matters one used to delight in &#8211; why has one&#8217;s interest in them now diminished? And why has sitting in stillness come to feel like eating one&#8217;s daily meals &#8211; such that, if one does not sit, it feels as though some task has been left undone, as though a meal has been missed?<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c9fd84e e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"c9fd84e\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b284fb9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b284fb9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t6. The Obstacle of the Literal Text &#8211; Genuine Realization Alone Suffices \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5b6b307 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5b6b307\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em>Yet during this period, although there is some small progress, the desire for profound attainment and doctrine also intensifies. Take the study of scripture as an example: during this period one is very easily led astray &#8211; hindered by the literal text, or, because one&#8217;s level of attainment has not yet arrived, guessing wildly, so that even when the guess is right, one does not know it. At times one grows confused again, the sense of it feels wrong and unclear, and one tries this or that in hope of stumbling onto understanding &#8211; but this approach is not a good one. For, upon inspection, The Holy Arctic Canon is not always so profound as it may appear; one may think there is something further to pursue, but such pursuit lies entirely in genuine realization [<\/em><em>\u5584\u609f<\/em><em>] &#8211; taking one&#8217;s own immediate body and mind, and all the affairs of daily life, as the evidence to test it against, and reaching realization through actual cultivation, actual meditation. This is far more effective. One should not be so fond of the lofty, so eager for the profound, as to chase after innate pre-cosmic [<\/em><em>\u5148\u5929<\/em><em>] attainment; one must understand that innate attainment, and the degree to which it is reached, are both won through effort done in one&#8217;s ordinary, acquired post-cosmic [<\/em><em>\u5f8c\u5929<\/em><em>] body and mind. Why should this all rest upon silent realization [<\/em><em>\u9ed8\u609f<\/em><em>]?<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-11324ff e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"11324ff\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bee13ca elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bee13ca\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t7. Preserving the Essence; Regulating Fire and Water \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b381e95 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b381e95\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em>Take, for example, the ability constantly to preserve the essence, and the instruction<\/em><em>\uff1a<\/em><em> \u201cregulate the fire, guide the water\u201d [<\/em><em>\u5206\u706b\u5c0e\u6c34<\/em><em>]. For a newly cultivating disciple, one should not chase after innate pre-cosmic work, but ask instead: how does one naturally preserve the essence? How does one naturally regulate fire and water? How can I do these naturally? In a single sentence: most simply do not know where to even begin. Speaking in plainer, <\/em><em>post-cosmic<\/em><em> [<\/em><em>\u5f8c\u5929<\/em><em>] terms: essence refers to the essence within one&#8217;s own body&#8217;s essence, vital energy, and spirit [<\/em><em>\u7cbe\u6c23\u795e<\/em><em>]; when essence is consolidated, energy stabilized, and spirit condensed, this essence &#8211; spoken of in its post-cosmic sense &#8211; is the very essence capable of begetting children, and is the refined quintessence of the five viscera and six organs. If one does not know how to preserve and nourish it, then even before the age of twenty or thirty, one may already show every kind of sign of weakness and decline and may even develop illnesses beyond cure.<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5db0791 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5db0791\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em>\u7cbe\u6c23\u795e<\/em><em> (essence, vital energy, and spirit) is the standard inner cultivation; <\/em><em>\u5148\u5929<\/em><em>\/<\/em><em>\u5f8c\u5929<\/em><em> (innate\/pre-cosmicl vs. acquired\/post-cosmic) is likewise a pair of distinguishing primordial endowment from ordinary bodily effort.<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-161641f e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"161641f\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5088f78 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5088f78\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t8. Youthful Development, and the Ailment One Cannot Disclose \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3ed9c19 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3ed9c19\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em>During the years of youthful development, everything in the body is at its most vigorous &#8211; yet one does not realize that youth carries with it ailments one is unwilling to disclose to others; and once these have persisted a long time, they become difficult to treat. There are those whose lifelong happiness is affected because of this: arising from the impulses of adolescent development, and from not understanding the principle of preserving the essence, it becomes an affliction one can no longer control. Tuberculosis is, in many cases, preceded by this kind of weakening, which then allows the tubercle bacillus to invade and take hold &#8211; and there are a great many such cases of which friends and relatives know nothing, and of which even parents remain unaware.<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-af2d555 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"af2d555\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-434e483 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"434e483\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>9. <strong>Sources of Injury to the Essence &#8211; Delighting in the Thing Without Seeing the Harm <\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-df285e6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"df285e6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em>All this shows how important the preserving of essence is, even at the post-cosmic level. <\/em><em>Beyond this, there are other favored pursuits that likewise injure the essence: staying up day and night hoping to guess correctly the winning numbers of the lottery [<\/em><em>\u516d\u5408\u5f69<\/em><em>], or playing the game of mahjong &#8211; winning is tense, and losing is no less tense; drinking alcohol to excess, smoking tobacco to excess, harbouring wrongful thoughts until right and wrong become confused and reversed, a single muddle from beginning to end &#8211; all of these are sources of injury to the essence. In the midst of all this, one delights in the thing without recognizing its harm, takes pleasure in it without guarding against its poison.<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ba6c45e e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"ba6c45e\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3133ad5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3133ad5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>10. <strong>In a Single Word, a Single Deed &#8211; Where Intention First Stirs <\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6beecdb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6beecdb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em>Even in matters of eating, drinking, and daily living &#8211; the ordinary affairs of everyday human relations, each and every task &#8211; there is a principle by which the essence is either preserved or injured. Cultivation begins from one&#8217;s own person, in everything one does; self-examination likewise begins from oneself, in everything one does. Consider, too, the seven emotions, the six sense-faculties and six sense-objects, greed, hatred, delusion, and craving, and arrogance, impulsiveness, partiality, and haste [<\/em><em>\u77dc\u8e81\u504f\u6025<\/em><em>] &#8211; all of these are matters of a single word, a single deed, the very place where intention and thought first stir; this is where cultivation and the treasuring of what is essential take place. As for all these matters of acquired life, however much we seek to cultivate them, they can never be exhausted &#8211; when, then, will we ever finish? And there are still the Four Vows besides, which need not even be mentioned here. As for the character <\/em><em>\u7a40<\/em><em> [grain], put simply, it refers to the spleen and stomach.
