“The aim of the Great Dao is to liberate oneself and save others. The two are of equal weight and must not be tilted toward either side. Without liberating oneself, there is no foundation upon which to save and rescue others. And without rescuing others, it is difficult to bring one’s own liberation or salvation to fulfilment.”

When the workings of the mind are upright, one will naturally not be fettered by selfish desires; when moral conduct is pure, one will naturally not be swayed by convention and custom. Even when poor and of low station, one can still command the esteem of one’s community. When successful and in a position of authority, one can secure the welfare of the masses. Cast aside the self-centred disposition of the individual, and broaden the generous capacity to regard all others as kin. This is what it truly means to be human, and what one ought to aspire toward.”

“Those who, dwelling in wealth and honour, are yet able to understand the destitution of the poor; and those who, living in comfort and ease, are yet able to understand the hardship of those who toil — these are no ordinary people. To know of others’ destitution and to think of how to relieve them is benevolence. To know of others’ hardship and to think of how to liberate them from it is wisdom. Benevolence together with wisdom is the intrinsic quality of a sage. Though deeds may differ in scope — great or small, broad or narrow — in their benevolence and wisdom there is no distinction.”

“To accomplish extraordinary deeds, to establish an enterprise for ages to come, and to leave an enduring legacy for posterity — one must possess an unyielding will and hold to a resolve that does not turn back despite a hundred setbacks. One must not be moved by gain, not be made to yield by power and authority, and not be obstructed by poverty and hardship. Though the whole world condemns it, one does not waver; though all under Heaven ridicules it, one does not change. Only then can success truly be achieved.”

“In taking one’s place between Heaven and Earth, one should possess a steadfast and enduring aspiration and an upright and resolute mind — such that in the face of great upheaval one’s course of action remains undisturbed, and when confronted with great matters one’s bearing is composed and unhurried. In cultivating noble character and practising the Dao, one should not forget the admonition of the three-fold daily self-examination. In establishing virtue and meritorious service, one should firmly uphold the timeless teachings. Fame and gain are not sufficient to stir the heart; sensory allurements are not sufficient to beguile the mind. Such a person may truly be called a supremely great hero and a man of genuine aspiration.”

“In the society of today, penal law is insufficient to bring the human mind under proper bounds, and morality has become a stale and outmoded discourse. All we can do is to guard carefully over our Divine principles and conscience, and to hold steadfastly to the great Dao of the Mean in establishing ourselves and engaging with the world. Let us not allow the bearing, words, and actions of others to become an obstacle to our own cultivation.”
