Thailand: The Earliest Northern Expansion (1936-1960)

Thailand represented the earliest stage of Dao Yuan’s northward expansion from Singapore, beginning even before the outbreak of the Second World War. In the opening planchette message of 1936, Singapore Dao Yuan received a divine directive appointing a committee to oversee the establishment of a Dao Yuan in Bangkok. Acting on this mandate, a pioneer member from Singapore traveled to Thailand carrying the Tablet of the Most Holy One -previously conferred in Beiping – together with fifteen copies each of the Holy Arctic Canon (圣极典) and Instructions on Meditation (静坐须知).

Records preserved in Singapore’s collection of planchette messages from 1937 – 1939 indicate that a Bangkok Tao Yuan Preparatory Lodge (暹京寄修所) had become operational by April 1938. Although no precise founding date survives, the available records strongly suggest that the lodge was established between March and April 1938. Planchette messages from March 1938 referred to the Bangkok member-in-charge receiving encouragement and instructions to make a “final push” toward its formation, while messages from April 1938 mention members of the Bangkok Preparatory Lodge receiving guidance on meditation practice. The lodge, established at Jen Ho Tong Pharmacy on Yaowarat Road, reportedly fulfilled the minimum requirement of twelve members. These records constitute the earliest documented evidence of Dao Yuan’s northward spread from Singapore into mainland Southeast Asia.

The outbreak of the Second World War severely disrupted further development. A passage in the 14th Anniversary Magazine of Singapore Tao Yuan (1950) acknowledged that little progress had been achieved in Bangkok throughout the 1940s. Nevertheless, efforts resumed in the postwar years. From 1948 onward, members such as Ma Wuxian (馬悟暹) restarted preparations for revival, and by 1950 Han Foguo (韓佛果) had arrived from Hong Kong to propagate the Dao, attracting increasing numbers of followers.

The preparatory phase finally concluded on 31 August 1960, corresponding to the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month, when the World Red Swastika Society Thailand Head Office (泰國總會) was officially inaugurated. This formal establishment effectively marked the closure of the Bangkok Preparatory Lodge after more than two decades of intermittent development. Although initially nurtured under Singapore’s guidance, the Thailand branch subsequently came under the jurisdiction of the Hong Kong Consecrate Office (驻香港宗母总办事处) as an independent national institution rather than remaining under Singapore’s regional administration.
