Part V - The Cosmological Foundation: 炁, The Most Holy One, and the Pre-Cosmic
5.1. The Primordial 炁 — Ground of All Cultivation
道在先天，無始無名，惟囫圓一炁，其在後天，生人生物，包涵萬有。炁化而生天地人物，則道自先天而入乎後天已。道也，炁胞也，即老祖之本體也，即萬能之主宰也。
The Dao in the pre-cosmic state has no beginning and no name - only the undivided, whole single-炁. In the post-cosmic state, it generates people and things, containing and embracing the ten thousand existences. 炁 transforms and generates Heaven, Earth, humans, and things - the Dao thus passes from the pre-cosmic into the post-cosmic. The Dao, the Primordial Energy Cell (炁胞) - these are the very body of The Most Holy One.
The two-phase cosmological framework – 先天 (pre-cosmic, the undivided primordial 炁) and 後天 (post-cosmic, the differentiated world of form and causality) – governs every teaching in the founding document. The practitioner who cultivates through seated meditation travels the return journey: from the post-cosmic dispersal of ordinary consciousness back to the pre-cosmic unity of the Primordial Energy Cell (炁胞). The Most Holy One’s descent from Mystic Mountain at 申刻 is the pre-cosmic entering the post-cosmic; the practitioner’s sitting meditation is the post-cosmic returning to the pre-cosmic. These are the same movement in opposite directions – the single cosmic breath of the Dao inhaling and exhaling.
