Part IV - The Compassion Gāthā
Every planchette session in the Dao Yuan tradition opens with the formal declaration of the transmitting deity’s origin-place. 妙山 – Mystic Mountain – is the celestial abode of The Most Holy One, the transcendent locus from which the Primordial 炁 condenses into a point of contact with the human world. The descent (來) is not metaphorical but cosmologically real: the pre-cosmic dimension enters the post-cosmic through the medium of the planchette altar.
4.1. 濟佛說慈偈 - Buddha Ji's Compassion Gāthās
Buddha Ji descends from Mystic Mountain (濟佛自妙山奉) and delivers ten instructional gāthās (吾今不繼文為勸善詩十章 – ‘I now do not continue with prose; instead, ten chapters of verse for encouraging goodness’). The gāthā-format (偈) is the Buddhist verse-form for condensed teaching – traditionally associated with the transmission of dharma in a form more memorable and portable than prose. Five principal gāthās address the core teachings:

Five principal gāthās address the core teachings
信道偈 - Trusting the Dao
The cultivator who genuinely understands the Dao does not need to see proof before acting; the Dao can be apprehended through practice itself. 吾今不繼文為勸善詩十章此亦進修之一助也 – ‘I now turn to poetry to encourage goodness; this too is an aid for advancement in cultivation.’
節慾偈 - Regulating Desire
The cycle of fortune – 道力與福力平時似亂真福力有盛衰,道力無富貧人生不學道 – ‘The Dao-action and Fortune-power: in ordinary times they seem chaotic; true fortune-power has rise and fall, but Dao-action knows no rich or poor. In life, not learning the Dao means Fortune-power waning without end.’
蜀孝偈 - Filial Piety
父母生我身天地孕我靈,生身母也苦孕靈天不聲 – ‘Father and mother gave birth to my body; Heaven and Earth conceived my Creative Intelligence. The body-birth mother suffers in toil; the Creative Intelligence-conceiving Heaven makes no sound’ – the dual parentage of body (human parents) and Creative Intelligence (Heaven-Earth) places the cultivator’s filial debt within a cosmological frame that extends beyond the family to encompass the entire cosmos.
解貪偈 - Releasing Greed
野鹿貪食草,忽中獵師箭老鼠翻飯盆,已落貓兒便禍從貪上生,苦自貪中現 – ‘The wild deer greedy for grass – suddenly struck by the hunter’s arrow. The rat overturning the rice bowl – already fallen into the cat’s convenience. Disaster arises from greed; suffering manifests from within greed.’ The animal analogies demonstrate that greed is cosmologically self-defeating.
矯騙偈 - Deception
奸漢欺淳漢,南鄉欺北鄉,小斗難與人眼下得便,宜暗中矚鬼神 — ‘The cunning man deceives the simple man; the southern village deceives the northern village; the small measure defrauds others – convenient in the eyes below, but in the darkness the ghost-spirits watch.’ The deceptive act that appears to succeed in the human social arena is simultaneously visible to the spiritual dimension – there is no truly private act.
